The Serie A Italian, known as "Calcio" is the most important and top-class competition in Italy. It is considered the third best league in Europe today. In 1898 the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) was founded and in 1929 the first championship of the Serie A Italiana was played. The top 3 club with the most championships won is Juventus Football Club with 35 titles, Inter Milan and Milan with 18 titles.

The championship is defined with round-trip matches between all clubs. At the end of the tournament, the Italian club with the most points is the champion of the Italian league and receiving the Scudetto. The top 4 finishers of the Serie A choose to play in the next season of the UEFA Champions League. The fifth and sixth qualifiers choose to play in the next season of the Europa League or UEFA Cup. The seventh place plays the Intertoto Cup.
